Graphics Driver crashes when using Studio 2015 on Windows 10

Hi!

My graphics driver (for Intel HD Graphics 520) crashes repeatedly when I am using Studio 2015 on Windows 10. The screen goes black and I receive a message saying that the graphics driver (for Windows 8! that I do not run..) has crashed and has been reset. I'm using the latest version of the drivers.

This has happened on two different laptops now so I'm starting to think that it might have to do with the program itself (and not with the computers). Does anyone else experience the same thing?

Please update your graphics driver. It seems, that the culprit might be the Win8 driver in Win10.
I also do use a laptop with Intel Graphics and did never encounter anything similar. Therefore I am quite certain, the problem is your outdated driver.

I just updated the drivers, and HP helped me find the most recent drivers (for Windows 10). So unfortunately that can't be the problem (it would have been easy to fix).

Even after the driver update? Then the driver in question is not updated properly... It should not show Win8...

Yes even after the update, and I have a Windows 10 driver. HP couldn't say where the message about "Windows 8" came from either, they just verified that my driver was up to date, then asked me to return the computer. And now the same thing happens with a Lenovo computer (that also refers to Windows 8, and that has the same (newest) drivers for win 10). Both computers where delivered with windows 10, so windows 8 was never on them.

But the crash always seem to happen when I use Studio 2015, that's why I thought it might be a strange incompatibility issue, maybe Trados is looking for a Windows 8 driver that isn't there? I can't explain it any other way.

Well, from what I observed on several machines with various graphics adapters there has never been any crashes related to video. And I use Studio since the very beginning of the very fist beta stage of Studio 2009. Have tested several betas on my PC with nVida and AMD graphics, used Studio on laptops powered by nVidia and now use Studio 2015 (from the very early beta) on a laptop with i7 processor and only the Intel graphics. Never seen this message before and never heard about it. Even y colleagues running Studio on Mac (under Windows) and obviously Intel graphics never reported any problems.
This is really strange, as Studio is processor-intensive, but has no big requirements in terms of graphics...
Do you use the native screen resolution? Is it higher than full HD?

I use native screen resolution and it's QHD, do you think that Studio could have a problem with this?

Indeed, this in not unlikely, as I remember someone having a laptop with this resolution reported problems with blurred display. You might possibly check the compatibility settings for Studio (right click on the executable). But as I do not have such a device for testing, I unfortunately cannot help here anymore.

I tried adapting the compatibility settings and nothing helped. Lowering the screen resolution actually made matters worse. I'm starting to think that Studio 2015 might be incompatible with the latest integrated graphics drivers from Intel.

It would be interesting to know if someone else has issues with the 6th generation of Intel processors/graphics and Studio 2015...

I have the exact same problem with a brand new computer and without question the latest drivers. This is definitely a Studio problem, and no one seems to be doing anything about it...

Please log a case so someone can look at this. If you don't have a support contract then for licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

I am currently trying out a beta version of Intel’s driver for the latest skylake processors, and it seems to be doing better.

I will be testing this for a while before I do anything else.

I still think this obviously is an issue that should be addressed by SDL’s programmers, since the problem occurs exclusively when working in Studio 2015.

I have no faith in any kind of support solution from SDL, since I know computers very well, I know mine is brand new and state of the art AND in ship shape, so the only thing SDL can do is change their software…

Hello Tommy,

I'm sorry you feel that way, and it won't be the first time I've seen brand new computers that are not as ship shape as you might expect! It also won't be the first time there is some new driver that we don't support and need to fix, but one things for sure. If we don't get to see these things when they come up then we'll never fix them at all!

But I hope you do manage to get more success with Intels driver.

Hello Tommy,

I'm sorry you feel that way, and it won't be the first time I've seen brand new computers that are not as ship shape as you might expect! It also won't be the first time there is some new driver that we don't support and need to fix, but one things for sure. If we don't get to see these things when they come up then we'll never fix them at all!

Thank you for your reply. I don't mean to be negative, it's just that I don't have any positive experiences with tech support so far - they have pretty much all been a waste of time (haven't tried SDL's). Anyway, from what I have been able to gather from colleague's experiences and from Internet searches, this seems to be quite a widespread problem, so it's certainly something SDL's programmers should be alert to. By the way, this does not only happen with 6th generation Intel processors. My previous computer was a 4th generation Intel core i7, and the same thing happened there...

Just to let you know, the beta driver from Intel, and perhaps also the latest update from SDL, seems to have done the trick. I have not had any crashes for at couple of days now - and when everything works like it is supposed to, Studio is a great piece of software :-)
