Dictionaries and Brand are the features provided by the SDL Machine Translation product, enabling users to ensure and enforce that certain terms, phrases and/or brands are correctly and consistently used throughout translations.
Dictionaries and Brands are two functionalities of SDL Machine Translation Cloud that can be used simultaneously or only one at a time. There are some differences between these two functionalities that should not be overlooked when performing translations.
Term lists are Language Pair and Domain specific. For instance, in order to translate a document belonging to the Technical Domain from English into French, a list with terminology specific to that particular domain should be created with the source entries English and their translations in French.
For each translation that is performed for a certain language pair, only one Term list can be used at a time. Term lists are applied only to the language pair for which they were initially created.
Unlike Term lists, Brand lists are not language pair specific, and they are applied across all the language pairs in an account.
In case there is an overlap of entries in the Term and Brand lists, the entries in the Term list will always take priority over the Brand list.
See the SDL Machine Translation Cloud user documentation for more details on recommendations and guidelines for creating Dictionaries:
