Hello, I'm a Translation and Interpretation student in Perú and I need to interview a translator who uses this program regularly. So if any of you would be available to answer a few simple questions via this forum, please do. Thanks.

    You'll find my answers below:

    1. Yes, every day, all day long.

    2. The latest version. I'm currently using SDL Trados Studio 2019.

    3. I've been using the program for many years now, so I find it easy to use, but it can be confusing when you're first getting started. I definitely find it useful, although there's always little things I'd like to see added here and there.

    4. In every field, I use it for all my translation work, even when the client doesn't require it.

    5. Not directly related to the use of Trados, but of course there are clients (agencies for the most part) who expect discounts for high fuzzy matches and 100% matches with the use of any CAT tool and their own TMs. Powerful features in Trados Studio, such as fuzzy match repair and AutoSuggest help me work faster, so that's one way to offset that. On the other hand, direct clients who have no idea what a fuzzy match is will not ask for a discount and in those cases Trados features will still help you work through a translation faster, with a more consistent result.

    Here are my answers to your questions:

    1. Do you use SDL Trados frequently?

    Yes, I use it for all my work. I never translate without it.

    2. What version do you prefer?

    Always the latest version because I love using the latest technology. I keep older versions on one of my computers in case anyone has problems and needs help using them. They still work fine but when I use them I appreciate more the extra features in the latest version (2019) that the earlier versions didn't have.

    3. Is the program format useful and easy to use? 

    I find it VERY useful and also, for me, easy to use. However, I have been using Studio and MultiTerm since they were first created (and Trados TagEditor/Workbench before that). It is very complex software and there is a whole lot to learn - though one does not need to know it all. Like using a computer, you learn as you use it and you only need to learn what is useful to you in your particular context.

    4. In which fields do you find it the most useful?

    Every field. I'm a technical translator and proofreader (reviewer). I specialise in several areas and use dedicated translation memories and termbases for each area/client.

    5. Do you experience declines in your quote when using this assisted translation tool?

    There is nothing to compare with because I always use it. I used other CAT tools in the past when I was employed but now I'm self-employed I prefer SDL Trados Studio and MultiTerm.

    here are my answers.

    Yes I use it for any translation project even when dealing with some components of narrative/academic essays and other publishing projects (e.g. bibliographies, captions, indexes and bibliographic notes).

    2. What version do you prefer?

    Always the latest production version available.

    3. Is the program format useful and easy to use?

    I am using it from its first version. And yes, even if it is not always true for a first-time user. You must get acquainted with the User Interface.

    4. In which fields do you find it the most useful?

    Technical/Commercial projects and, in any case, when you are dealing with projects with a lot of 100% and fuzzy (say 70%) repetitions. Moreover it is useful when editing/proofreading already translated documents or when updating already translated documents inserting new segments using my existing local Translation memories and Termbases. Moreover it may be useful even with dealing with not technical/commercial projects.

    5. Do you experience declines in your quote when using this assisted translation tool?

    No, with the exception of 100% matches and internal file repetitions. Language services providers often request a discount rate for 100% matches and repetitions. I do not apply any discount for fuzzy matches below 100%.
