Possible bug in Trados Studio 2021?: The wrong file path appearing in a copied sdlproj

I'm afraid there is a possible bug and I have confirmed it with Trados Studio 2021 CU9 and CU10.

Here's how to reproduce it.

  1. Create a Trados project.
Trados Studio interface showing Project 1 in progress with a file named Test.docx.sdlxliff in the Files view.
  2. Right-click on the project in Projects view and select [Remove from list] to remove it from the project list.
Context menu in Trados Studio with 'Remove from List' option highlighted for Project 1.
  3. Copy all the related files/folders of the project to another folder in Windows explorer.
Windows Explorer showing the original and copied SDLPROJ folders for Project 1.
  4. Open the copied project in Trados.
Open Project dialog in Trados Studio with the copied SDLPROJ folder selected.
  5. Check the file path in Files view and the file path remains the one in the original project created in the step 1.
Files view in Trados Studio showing the file path for Test.docx.sdlxliff pointing to the original project folder instead of the copied one.

As expected, if you go on to work on this project, the file in the shown file path would be overwritten and we have never seen or experienced this behavior in the previous Trados versions such as Trados 2019.

To work around this issue, you need to close the Trados application and re-open it before the step 4.

You may be wondering why you would want to copy a project to another folder and open it there but as long as we are concerned, me and all my colleagues usually go through several steps to prepare a translation project in Trados so we make it a habit to save a copy of the project in each folder per step so that in case of an error or mistake, we can "roll back" to a previous step and retrieve the project in the corresponding folder and redo whatever needs to be done differently and I'm sure we are not the only ones who would be troubled by this possible bug.

I would like you to check if this is a bug or by design and thank you in advance for your reply.

  • -san, thank you for sharing the link and I'm sorry that I missed your post in the first placeBow

Without closing and reopening Studio: after copying and opening the copy of the project go to View and Refresh View. The path to the files is updated.

I was only aware of the first workaround and I have confirmed that the second one works for us as well and this one is more practical. Thank youGrin

-san@RWS, it turns out that this has been a known issue (CRQ-26813) for more than 4 months and my I ask what your plan at RWS is?

Are you guys planning to fix it in Trados 2021 or defer it to the next version (Trados 2022)?

    I'd apricate your reply.

  • Hello

I`ve checked the bug you mentioned and it is already fixed and it will be implemented in Studio 2022. In the bug details the first steps is "Open Studio 2021 and make sure you are Singed Out from Language Cloud > from the top righthand side of the screen." I tested without being singed out from LC and followed only the exact steps you mentioned, probably that`s why I couldn`t reproduce it.

    Thank you,

    Sorin

  • Dear -san, thank you for your prompt reply.

I`ve checked the bug you mentioned and it is already fixed and it will be implemented in Studio 2022.

Glad to know that Studio 2022 rolls out without this issue but what about Studio 2021?

I believe Studio 2021 CU10 (Cumulative Updates for Trados Studio 2021 SR2 (sdl.com)) is the latest now and I still see this issue exist there.

    Thank you.

  • Hello

The bug was fixed just after CU10 was released so it wasn`t implemented in this version. If another CU will be released for Studio 2021 SR2 it`s possible to implement it in that one but at the moment we don`t have any information about this.

    Thank you,

    Sorin

  • -san, thank you for your reply.

In my opinion, the severity of this issue is relatively high and even after Studio 2022 comes out, I'm sure many of us will be using Studio 2021 most of the time for a while so I would like you to inform the development team that there are multiple groups who express concerns and want it fixed in Studio 2021 as well as soon as possible?

And one more thing, it there any other known issues in Studio 2021 that frequent users like us should be aware of?

    Thank you.

So even after the release of Trados Studio 2021 CU12 (Cumulative Updates for Trados Studio 2021 SR2 (sdl.com)),
I find this issue still lingering in Trados 2021 and I even feel like questioning the RWS's sense of responsibility.

I'm very disappointed that this issue has not been taken seriously even though RWS still officially supports Trados 2021.

  • I can only agree! This bug is very serious. In a translation company like ours projects are copied from one place to another quite often. Regardless of if it is good practice or not, in my opinion it is understandable to have workflows including copying projects and a bug like this should be fixed asap.

Also, as far as I know, this bug does not only apply to copies of projects, but also to projects exported out of packages. So, if the same user opens the main project located at folder A and afterwards opens a package created out of this project in folder B, he/she will encounter the same issue, since the project name is the same.
