Trados Studio 2022 - Definitely a problematic "Find & Replace" window!

The "Find & Replace" window is definitely a big problem in Trados Studio version 2022: having resolved the "always on top" issue, now I have two more issues:

1) in Studio version 2021 for years I have been using Ctrl+H to open this window in the full version (Find AND Replace, and not only Find, which is smaller), but in 2022 there is no way of obtaining this.
Whatever I click - Ctrl+F or Ctrl+F - I always obtain the small version of the window.

Screenshot of Trados Studio's 'Find and Replace' window showing only the 'Find' tab active with an empty 'Find what:' field.

while I would like to get the full window when I use Ctrl+H, as I've done for years:

Screenshot of Trados Studio's 'Find and Replace' window with the 'Replace' tab active, displaying empty 'Find what:' and 'Replace with:' fields.

2) When the "Replace with" space is filled, and I have done some work already, I had the option to select previous translations by using the dropwodn menu on the right side of this space, but now it is impossible to use it becuase, when I click on the right side of the bar I get only a quick glimpse of the dropdown list, which disappears in less than a second, making it impossible to click on any of the listed items. This is really annoying, it is a normal function that is not working, definitely.

Could these two issues be fixed? I would appreciate this very much. I spent €300 to update from 2021 to 2022 and I am experiencing only worsened functionalities at the moment... this is quite frustrating. I hope someone will help me to resolve these issues quickly!!

Valeria

  • Sorry Jesus, X stands for 10 of course, it's the Roman number ;-)  Yes, I have Windows 10 in my laptop.

As to restarting the PC: in the past, with Studio 2021, when it stuck (rarely) I pushed the iconic Ctrl+Alt+Canc and I got a list of the opened apps, where I could simply select Trados Studio and close it from there, and then restart it. And that worked perfectly.
Now, with Studio 2022, when it blocks, I push Ctrl+Alt+Canc but I get a different window, where I cannot find the app to close with a simple click.
So there is NO other solution than pushing the ON/OFF button of my PC for 5 seconds and force its switch off. I know this is not a good solution but... what else?

    Hi Valeria,

Firstly, here's the answer to your question:

To open Task Manager another way, you can type Task Manager into the search box where it says 'Type here to Search':

Windows search showing Task Manager highlighted in the search results with options to open or run as administrator.

There, you can click on Task Manager in either the top of the left column or on the right, or just on Open (or Run as administrator which should give you administrator rights).

You can also search for it by clicking on your Windows icon, bottom left of your screen (by default)

The pop up menu is alphabetical, you can scroll down* till you reach Windows System, click on that and it opens a dropdown menu where you can find and open Task Manager.

(*You can also click on one of the capital letters in the alphabetical list to see the alphabt, then click on W to take you to the W list faster.)

Regarding clicking Ctrl+Alt+Del (on an English keyboard) gives you a menu with choices, one of which is Task Manager. Click on that.

Once you have that open, here's what you see by default in Windows 10 (Studio 2024 is open here so the colour is different to the black and blue icon you will see):

Task Manager window displaying a list of processes sorted by memory usage with Trados Studio and other applications running.

(Note for anyone using Windows 11, it's a more concise box that opens initially and you have to click to take you to the view you want)

If what you see is not the above, can you see tabs? If so, click on either the Processes tab or the Details tab. In either, you can re-order the list by clicking on the column headers. The above is ordered by 'Memory' so that the programs/apps using the most memory are listed top down.

Then, you can use the > arrows to the left to open a menu showing the processes in use:

Task Manager showing processes with Trados Studio expanded to reveal an 'Error' status under one of its subprocesses.

Here, I was able to use 'End task' to remove the 'error' dialog and it disappeared:

Task Manager with high CPU and memory usage by Google Chrome and Trados Studio, indicating potential system stress.

It's not usallly that easy but it was a very simple error messag. Then you need to use End task to close Studio, which takes seconds. If I've overloaded Studio with too many complex tasks and it freezes, I use the above to close it quickly and easily. (Sorry if you already knew all that)

Just so you know, here's what the Details tab looks like, this time with Studio 2022 open:

Details tab in Task Manager listing processes including SDLTradosStudio.exe with memory usage and other details.

Once again, select the program and click 'End task'.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

  • Infinite thanks to you, Alison! I will try the solutions you gave me next time the app freezes or closes unexpectedly.

However, the Find & Replace window issue is still pending... no way, when I click Ctrl+H only the Find window opens up and I have to click again on "Replace" to get the full window version... :-(

I'm pleased to have helped in some small way

As regards Ctrl+H only opening the first tab, the Replace tab... did you try Reset Window Layout?

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the 'View' tab with 'Reset Window Layout' button highlighted.

It's an unusual fault for Ctrl+H to open the Find tab. I know you've reset your keyboard shortcuts as suggested by Lyds.

If the Find and Replace dialog simply doesn't open visibly at all, it's usually because it's been opening on a second screen that has since been turned off or unplugged. This obviously is not what's happening in your case.

    A question...

Once you have opened the dialog using Ctrl+H, if you used Ctrl+H a second time, does the Find tab switch to the Replace tab? That is the normal pattern of behaviour for Ctrl+H when the Find and Replace dialog is already open on the Find tab.

    Try the following:

Change the shortcut for Replace from Ctrl+H to Ctrl+Alt+H as below:

Screenshot of Trados Studio 'Options' dialog with 'Keyboard Shortcuts' section, highlighting the 'Replace' command set to 'Ctrl+Alt+H'.

    What happens then?

If I make the above change, Ctrl+Alt+H works exactly as Ctrl+H does, i.e. correctly.

If it doesn't for you then it's not the shortcut that's at fault... Let me know what happens.

    All the best,

  • No, it stays in the only Find window. To obtain the Replace window I have to click on the Replace tab myself.

And again, the app won't be closed in any manner. I must swotch off the computer by long pressing the OFF key. Horrible.

Changing the shortcut will only help you if you have also adapted the AHK script you are probably using to keep the window from being on top?  Don't forget the script is overriding the default behaviour.

It does sound as though you have a more system-related problem.
