Unable to open TM file via "Project Settings" in Trados Studio 2017

When I try to open a TM file via "Project Settings" in Trados Studio 2017, I get an error message saying "The requested file could not be located".
Under RWS Support Gateway I then found the following solution:

"1. Close every RWS application.

2. Go to this location:

for Trados Studio 2017 : C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

3. Find this file: TranslationMemoryRepository.xml, and rename it to TranslationMemoryRepository_old.xml or delete it

4. Open Trados Studio and see if you still experience the issue.

Note: This issue has been permanently fixed in Trados Studio 2021 SR 1 on build 16.1.0.3490.
Root Cause
The cause of the error is that the translation memory cannot be accessed anymore, for example because it's no longer available on a Network Drive or the user doesn't have access to it.
Reference

Cannot find the path in the resolution steps?
If you cannot see the files and folder paths mentioned in this article, it is likely that Windows Explorer is not configured to show hidden files and folders. Please refer to following article to find out how to show hidden files and folders: Showing hidden files, folders and extensions on Windows operating systems"

When I then try to complete Step 2 in this list of instructions, I get a directory containing 6 SDL Trados Studio files, with the file names ending with numbers, for example SDL Trados Studio_308. These files contain computer code. I am unable to find the file mentioned in Step 3 above and whose name needs to be changed or which needs to be deleted.

I wonder if I have correctly entered the path mentioned in Step 2 above. Should "UserName" in the path be substituted by an actual user name? If so, what user name is meant? Has this something to do with the operating system? I use Windows 11.

I would greatly appreciate help here from a friendly community member of adminstrator, as soon as possible. Without being able to access a TM, I am unable to continue my work for a translation agency.

Many thanks in advance.

The error message you mention only appears if you open a project which then tries to open the TMs that are assigned to the project. It means that it cannot find the TM in the given location. This can happen because the TM has been moved or deleted in the meantime.
The easiest way to correct this is to go to your project settings, remove the TM that cannot be found and add the TM again from the location where it is currently located.

  • Good afternoon Walter,

Thanks very much for the help offered.  However, I am not sure that the solution you suggest applies to my particular case.

This is what happened: I loaded a translation project into Trados Studion 2017 and opened it.  A TM was supplied separately by the translation agency that is to be used for the translation.  I stored the TM file in a folder next to the folder containing the project.  After opening the project in Trados I then tried to select the TM (via "Project Settings") from its location in the folder, and it was then that I received the error message.  Normally the TM is added to the list of TMs in the top window on the "Project Settings" page after it has been selected.
In the past this has always occurred without any problems. I have had to install Trados anew after my hard drive failed and had to be replaced.  This is my first attempt to use Trados with the new hard drive.
In the meantime I have moved the TM to another location, but still get the same error message.

    Thanks again for your support.

OK, don't worry about this file, It is only present if you have previously opened a TM in the "Translation Memories " view.

    emoji
  • When I try to open the TM in this way,  I get the same error message again, i.e. "Die angeforderte Datendatei kann nicht gefunden werden".

Please show a screenshot of what you see when you navigate to the mentioned folder!

  • Hello again Walter,

    Here is the requested screenshot.

Screenshot of Trados Studio with a Translation Memory dialog box open. The dialog shows a file named 'SCB_DE-GB' with a last modified date of 17.09.2024 and size 0 KB, indicating an empty or possibly corrupted file.

Can you open a TM in the other folder "SCB TM September"?

  • Answers to your questions

    1) underneath the screenshot

The translation memory file SCB_DE-GB is located in the folder  SB TM September 2024, which you can see at the end of the file path near the top of the screen.

When I click twice on the filename of the TM file with the left mouse button I get the error message.

There is no other folder  SB TM September 2024.

    2) in the yellow oblong

Where is the "OK" you refer to?

("SCB_DE-GB" appears in the  "Dateiname" field when I click once on the filename of the TM file with the left mouse button.)

    Best regards,

    Stephane

  • There is no other folder  SB TM September 2024.

Sorry, I saw this folder name on the left without realising it is the one you are in already.

But what puzzles me is the size of your TM:
Screenshot of Trados Studio showing an open folder 'SCB TM September 2024' with a file 'SCB DE-GB' highlighted, indicating a file size of 0 KB with a red error arrow.

How did you create this TM?

Try to open another TM, e.g. one of the 3 TMs in the SAMPLES folder:

  • Good morning Walter;

Unfortunately, I cannot find any sample TMs on my notebook.  I follow the path indicated and get as far as "Projects" and no further - this directory appears to be empty.

SDL Trados Studio dialog box with the title 'Database Translation Memory open' showing an empty 'Projects' directory with a message 'No search results were found.'

At this stage, I would try to open an old TM I have used in the past, but as I have already explained, my hard drive failed a few days ago and I lost all the data on it.  I am now using a newly installed one.
Would it be possible to send a sample TM to me at  picault48@gmx.de ?  Alternatively, I could ask the translation agency I work for to send me an old TM.  However, I'm not sure this would be possible.

Best regards and have a good day,

    Stephane

When you install Studio, it automatically installs the "Sample Project". Unless you unticked that default option on installation, you should find this folder here:
    ..\Documents\Studio 20xx\Projects\Samples\Sample Project\

where xx stands for the Studio version.
In this folder there is a subfolder "TMs", which contains 3 TMs.

  • Hello again Walter,

I have downloaded the sample project and managed to open one of the sample TMs in Trados.  I suspect this means that the TM I was unable to select via "Project settings" is corrupt or faulty in some way.  In addition, you have drawn attention to the fact that the size of this TM is indicated as zero by Trados Studio, which is highly suspicious.

I am right in concluding that there is something wrong with the  SCB_DE-EN file?

This is strange, because the translation agency that provided me with this TM file has assured me several times that there is nothing wrong with it. In fact it was provided to me (via a server) twice, and I was unable to select both instances of the file via "Project settings" in the usual way.

    Best,

    Stephane

At least we know now that the problem is not with Studio, but that you were trying to open a file, which is not a "proper" TM.

Why don't you also create your own TM? Even if the agency sends you a TM along with a job, it is a good idea to also have your own private TM, which you update with all the translations you do.

  • The translation agency updates the particular client-specific TM on an ongoing basis with all the translations completed by translators for this client.  Every few months I ask them to provide me with the TM in its latest version. However, I will consider creating a TM of my own for the client.  At least it will not do any harm.  One can always work with several TMs at the same time.

I will see what happens in the future. At the moment I am working on a translation with a TM that has been assigned specifically to the  project, and so far there have been no major problems.  However, I am not able to use the DeepL machine translation software, which has been integrated in Trados Studio, in the usual way.  I will contact you later about this problem, supposing that you have some knowledge of this matter.

Many thanks for your help up to now, which has been excellent.  I will let you know how this problem is finally resolved with the agency.

    Best regards,

    Stephane

Yes, even if the agency provides you periodically you with an updated TM, it is good practice to also have your own TM, which you always add as a second TM to your projects so that it also gets updated.
About the TM that you could not open, and which had a size of zero: how did you get it? Was it in a Studio package, or did you download it separately? The problem might also be due to a problem while downloading.

  • The TM was provided in a zipped file on the agency's server.  It was not part of a package.  I simply downloaded the file and unzipped it.

If I remember rightly, I had to enter a password to unzip the file the first time, but no password was needed for the second instance of the file.

  • Hello again Walter,

I have another problem concerning the use of the DeepL machine translation software which has been integrated into my Trados Studio 2017 software via a plug-in.

Although I have selected the DeepL add-on via "Project Settings", the machine translation results do not appear on my screen.  There is a narrow window at the top of the screen that is intended for machine translation results but it remains empty.  In the window below, I can use the button provided to insert TM resullts, but there is no equivalent button for inserting the DeepL machine translation results.

Can you please provide help here? I have found an RWS Community discussion on a similar problem, and have tried some of the solutions proposed, but the problem remains unresolved.

Or perhaps you could pass on this question to a support engineer specialised in this particular area.

Here is what the Trados Studio interface looks like:

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2017 interface with DeepL Translator plugin showing translation results pane empty. The 'Translation Results' window is open but no content is displayed.

    Many thanks in advance,

According to your screenshot, you only use the TM SCB-DE-GB and no Deepl.

Can you please show us a screenshot of your Project Settings?
    You should see this:

Screenshot of Trados Studio Project Settings showing the 'Language Pairs' section with 'Translation Memory and Automated Translation' expanded. A single entry 'DeepL Translation provider' is listed as enabled with no penalty.

And a small request: please do not add new questions on a different subject into an existing thread, but open a new one if you change the subject.

  • Hello again Walter,

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    '
I hope it's OK if I continue the discussion in this thread, although I should have opened a new one for this new topic.

Here is the requested screenshot.  As you can see, the DeepL software has been selected,  The TM that can also be seen was assigned to this job by the translation agency.

  • Which version of the plugin are you using?

    emoji
  • Can you please tell me where I can find this information?  I downloaded the plug-in for Trados Studio 2017 from the RWS website, but am now unable to find where I did this and the plug-in version I used. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

    emoji
  • Go to "Add-Ins - RWS AppStore" and check the version number that is displayed:

Trados Studio interface showing the Add-Ins tab highlighted, with the RWS AppStore selected. A list of installed plug-ins is empty. The DeepL Translation Provider plugin is visible with an update available indicated by a red arrow.

For Studio 2017 you should have version 3.8.12.0.

I downloaded the plug-in for Trados Studio 2017 from the RWS website,

You should not download the plugin from the website, but install it from the inbuilt AppStore shown above.
Click on "AppStore" and enter "Deepl" into the search field:

RWS AppStore search bar with 'deepl' entered, showing the DeepL Translation Provider plugin in the search results. The plugin is marked as free and has a download arrow icon.

Click on the arrow down to install the plugin.

This procedure will automatically ensure that you install the plugin version that is compatible with your version of Studio, and is less error-prone than downloading the plugin manually from the website.

I suggest you first remove the one you have, restart Studio and then install in the way I described.

  • Hello again Walter,

    Thanks for this information.

Following your instructions, I have uninstalled the plug-in for Trados Studio 2017 that I had previously downloaded from the RWS website.

However, when I try to download the plug-in via "RWS AppStore" I get the following screen.  As you will see, the button to the right of plug-in version 3.8.12.0 does not appear on the screen, unlike the buttons for the other versions. So I cannot proceed further.
Screenshot of RWS AppStore showing a list of Trados Studio versions with download buttons. The button for version 3.8.12.0 for Trados Studio 2017 is missing.Am I doing something wrong here?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

    Best regards,
