How to disable "Generate preview" (Générer un aperçu) once and for all ?

Hi everyone,

When working on Trados, as I am typing, a "Générer un aperçu" often pops up. I don't know the key combination that triggers it... and it is really annoying as it takes a lot of time to generate that preview, although nothing actually happens when it seems to be over. Then, when I confirm a segment, it seems to be trying again and again to generate that ghost preview, and Trados finally shuts down. The only solution I came with until now is to close Trados and re-open it, but it is such a waste of time.

It already happened a lot in Trados 2021, and now in Trados 2024.

I have deleted many shortcuts, to no avail...

Does anyone have a solution? I tried on the chat, but the person could not find any solution either. Did not even seem to be aware of that issue.

Thanks a lot,

Virginie

  • Try to remove all View Internally shortcuts in Options > Keyboard Shortcuts. Just put cursor into each of these three shortcut cells and press Del.
Don't forget to click OK to save your choice.

*BTW weirdly even though I have those shortcuts assigned, I can't recall that I ever experienced the issue...

Question improvement suggestion: Please specify the exact version of Trados Studio you are using, as the steps to disable the "Generate preview" feature may vary between versions.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Virginie,

To address the issue of the "Générer un aperçu" (Generate preview) feature in Trados Studio, you can try the following steps:

    Step 1: Open Trados Studio.

Step 2: Go to the "File" menu and select "Options".

Step 3: Navigate to the "Editor" section.

Step 4: Under the "Automation" category, look for any options related to "Generate preview" or "Preview settings".

Step 5: If you find an option that allows you to disable the automatic generation of previews, uncheck it.

Step 6: Click "OK" to save your changes.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider checking for any keyboard shortcuts that may be triggering the preview generation. You can do this by going to "File" > "Options" > "Keyboard Shortcuts" and reviewing the assigned shortcuts.

Additionally, if you are experiencing crashes, it may be beneficial to ensure that you are using the latest version of Trados Studio, as updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

  • No relevant option in "Automation", all seemingly relevant shortcuts already disabled.

  • Hi Virginie,

    Please verify these two things:

    - If you have an AutoHotkey app installed on your computer, pause it or disable it while using Trados - as it may be a conflict between such app and the shortcuts Trados has. Then open Trados and try to open a file in Editor view and see if the pop-up appears with the app disabled and let me know of the outcome.

    - Create a simple local project, with just one local file to translate - no termbases and no TMs added, no other resources, just the file. Open the file in Editor view and see if the pop-up appears if you don't have any resources added, and please reply here and let me know. If possible, use a file that does not have any sensitive information and if the pop-up appears - take a screenshot. Also, try the same thing with a local project, local file and local TM and see if the pop-up appears when using only local resources and no shared/server-based ones.

Thank you. I look forward to your reply.

    Kindest regards,

    Anca

  • Hi Virginie

RWS introduced a series of options on the right hand side of the screen. They are really reactive, so you just need to put your mouse over them for a fraction of a second and the relevant window opens (and then takes a long time to close on it's own.)

I'm guessing from your description this is what you're seeing, in the screenshot below. It happens because you briefly put the cursor over the Preview item that I've highlighted in a yellow bar - easy to do by accident; happens to me al the time!

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the Preview pane open on the right side, highlighted in yellow, with a close button circled in the top-right corner.

If this is the case, then you can wait for it to close itself (which can take up to 10 seconds) - in which case it'll happen again next time you move the cursor there(!) - or you can close it manually by clicking on the cross at the top right where I've highlighted in a circle.  If you do that, then the Preview option will be removed from the menu, so it won't happen again.  Of course, that may just mean that you get one of the other windows opening - Notifications, TQE, etc, in which case if you don't want them you can just close them in the same way.

If you later decide you do want to use those features, just go to View/Reset Window Layout and it'll restore them.

    Hope that helps,

    Rob

  • Hi Robert,

It is something different. It is a small window that opens while I am using the keyboard, not when I hover over the tabs on the right. The window opens in the middle of Trados (same place as any other window indicating an error, or that something is in progress, or asking if I want to save my work if I try to close the file and all has not been saved yet). It says "Génération de l'aperçu" ("Generating preview"). And it is in progress for a while (green color, short then full), but generates absolutely nothing. Then the window closes and I can work / type again but from that moment on, each time I confirm a segment, it takes a very long time as there is this "Génération de l'aperçu" at the bottom, on the left side.

I did try something yesterday, and it has not happened since. I removed the preview tab on the right. I tried to remove the "preview" button as well on the ribbon, but it does not seem to be possible. I can not know if I "killed" it altogether though, as it does not happen all the time, only way too often!

    Thanks for trying to help,

    Virginie

  • Hi Anca,

    - I don't have any AutoHotkey installed on my computer.

    - As to the second solution, since the window does appear while I am typing, sometimes only after a few hours, it won't be easy right now.

It happens while I am using the keyboard, typing fast.

    - Yesterday, I deleted the "preview tab" on the right hand side. I typed quite a lot this morning, and I haven't seen that window. But then again, it pops up rather randomly, so I can not be sure it won't pop up again. I did this because someone suggested it on another thread in this group, some time ago:

     https://community.rws.com/product-groups/trados-portfolio/trados-studio/f/studio/41010/urgent-rws-please-do-provide-a-solution-how-to-terminally-kill-generating-preview

I did not manage to remove the "preview" button on the ribbon though. I untick the box, close the window but it is still on the ribbon and, if I open the "customize" window again, I can see that the box has not been unticked.

    Best,

    Virginie

  • Hi Virginie

Looking at the Community - and also ProZ - it seems like this has dropped up quite a lot over the years, and no-one has a definite solution for it, but one other thread I saw suggested there may be some connection to how your TMs are connected - one person found the issue was connected to using TMs on GroupShare (not clear how!), and a suggestion was to disable automatic updating of TUs on confirmation - might be worth giving that a try.

  • Ok, then try to assign a shortcut to the Preview command. Say Ctrl+Shift+Alt+P, hardly you can hit it by mistake.
    And see if that helps.
